(TORONTO, ON) December 23, 2022 -- The Toronto Beaches are extremely excited today to announce that Beaches native Jacob Hickey has been named the team's captain ahead of the 2023 season.
"Jacob is the ultimate leader and teammate. He sets the tone every day and leads by example. We couldn’t be happier to announce him as our next team captain," Beaches head coach Reilly O'Connor said of the decision.
Hickey has spent his entire junior career with his hometown team, carving out a roster spot for himself after playing for the Junior B West Durham Ironheads.
Hickey served as the Beaches' Futures team captain during the condensed 2021 OJLL bubble season. He was also named an assistant captain for the Beaches this past summer.
The lefty finished third in team scoring in 2022, posting 19 goals and 45 points in 16 contests. He also added 11 goals and 26 points in 11 postseason games, including a hat trick in Game 5 of the team's second-round series against the Burlington Chiefs -- which saw the team clinch the first Minto Cup berth in franchise history.
"I’m honoured to be named captain of this team, especially since I grew up in the beach watching the junior A team play," Hickey said. "I’m really excited for the season. I think last year set the bar for future Beaches teams and we’re looking to build on that and come back even stronger this season.
"We have such a great organization and an incredible team and we’re ready to compete for a Minto cup this summer."
Following a record-setting 2022 campaign, the Beaches organization is excited to return to action in the new year. Stay tuned in the coming months for our schedule release along with the announcement of the Beaches' roster heading into the coming summer.
