(PICKERING, ON) July 31, 2022 -- The Toronto Beaches were able to win Game 5 of their Semi-Final series against the Burlington Chiefs, making franchise history in the process.
Beaches native Jacob Hickey scored two pivotal third-period goals while Cam Acchione was able to put the game on ice, scoring on a transition opportunity with 22 seconds remaining to seal an 8-6 victory.
With the series victory, the Beaches will head to the Ontario Finals for only the second time in franchise history. The last occasion was in 2002 when the Beaches finished the year as the second seed with a 14-6 record. They'd defeat the Orillia Rama Kings and Peterborough Lakers to meet the St. Catharines Athletics in the Finals.
After setting a franchise-best record in regular-season victories with 15, the second-seeded Beaches have bested Peterborough and Burlington to make it back to the Finals.
After winning a Game 5 of their own, the Whitby Warriors will be the other team vying for the Iroquois Trophy.
Both teams, however, have each clinched a berth in the 2022 Minto Cup, set to be held in Brampton, Ontario from Aug 22-29.
The Ontario Finals will be a three-game series. Following the finals, the league will go on a two-week break while the 2022 World Lacrosse Men's U21 World Championship takes place in Limerick, Ireland.
