(TORONTO, ON) July 1, 2022 -- The Toronto Beaches came out on top of a crucial showdown on Friday night, beating the Oakville Buzz 11-8 at Ted Reeve Arena.
The first frame was a showdown of two NLL goaltenders in Will Johnston and Aden Walsh. Goals were hard to come by, with the Beaches coming up with the only two through the first 20 minutes. Willem Firth was the man to get both tallies, giving his team a slim lead heading into the first intermission.
Oakville answered in a big way to start the second, scoring four consecutive goals to open the period. Eric McDonald and Luke Dawick tied things up before back-to-back markers from Hugh Kelleher pushed the visitors' lead to two. Toronto answered back with a three-goal run of their own. Jacob Hickey ripped a moving shot past Walsh before Matt Acchione and Dylan Robinson put home consecutive transition goals.
Jake Dawick added another for Oakville to knot the game at five heading into the third and final frame.
Firth completed his hat trick to get the Beach back into the lead to start the third. An energy goal from Acchione doubled the lead and after Lucas Ferreira got the Buzz back to within one, the Beaches took a stranglehold on the game with a four-goal run.
Josh Fairey started it off with another transition goal. He was followed by Zach Miller, Firth, and Jakson Raposo.
Oakville would have a pair of power-play goals with a few minutes left in regulation, but it wouldn't be enough.
Now sitting at 12-5 on the summer, the Beaches welcome the Six Nations Arrows to The Sand Box on Sunday night for their third home contest of the week.
